Eco-friendly cars keep industry competitive

While American carmakers have been looking to the Government for rescue, European manufactures in a conference last week agreed to set up a task force promoting “green” affordable cars.

“Caring about the European car industry means caring about millions of present and future jobs in the EU, it also means caring about clean and affordable cars to respond to the right to mobility in an environmental friendly way. Responding to stakeholders concerns now, will help us find the most appropriate answer and to turn the current crisis into a chance”.  European Commission Vice- President and CARS 21 chairman Gunter Verheugen said.

It might be a good policy. Amid fears of recession European car manufacturers are cutting production and scaling back on profit forecasts. Car sales fell, for example, for the fifth consecutive month in September, forcing some German and French factories to temporarily close down.

U.S car manufacturers are even worse off. In August Toyota sold more cars in America than Chrysler, and GM, which in 1960 alone held 60 % of the American market, said October’s sales was the lowest in 25 years. Looking for a solution, the National Auto Dealers Association last week urged President Bush to offer tax credits to boost new-car purchases.

But a policy promoting sales might not be the right answer. In April 2005 the European Commission set up competitive automotive regulatory system for the 21st century (CARS 21). This high-level group with members from both the car industry and government are responsible to make long and short term public policy. The goal: developing eco-friendly cars as a way to fight global warming and keep the industry competitive.

  1. I have no problem with "green" cars...Or because I live in TEXAS green Trucks....but I will sell my farm to buy gas or diesel before I start cruising around in one of those "smart cars"....I don't care how good the mileage.....those things are so tiny, you have to open the door to change your mind....lol....And god forbid you hit a deer or stray cow with one of those things. A good full sized Angus, or a one of the smaller Brahma bulls (a runt of the litter so to speak is over a ton....yikes)will mess your day up....you get air flighted out of the scene by a helicopter, and the animal gets a band aid on it boo boo, and goes back to eating grass in the pasture....and then there is the occasional horse..........lol....riff

  3. are you sure about that?...Take hydrogen for instance...can be produced with solar powered facilities, end by products of use......water....at this time storage of the stuff is a bit of a problem, but recent....cheaply made advances have been made, that are getting closer to that end......and will be affordable....riff

  5. That would be an interesting approach, sooner or later eco-friendly cars will enter the market and that will bring some serious changes in all economical levels. Cars will always sell.
